Award for “The Joinery Compendium”
The Joinery Compendium was awarded by the Stiftung Buchkunst as one of the most beautiful German books in the category Specialist Books/Scientific Books/Textbooks.
Jury statement:
“This heavyweight compendium presents more than 400 traditional wood joints from all over the world and impresses with its consistent design grid. The lexically structured layout and the simplified illustrations make it easy to find and compare the various techniques and thus lend the volume multifunctionality. Wood lovers, designers, craftspeople and architects will find this both a source of inspiration and a practical workbook.
The 896 pages are presented with captivating clarity, supported by the concise two-color design. The sensitive choice of font and the stringent page layout allow for the harmonious placement of technical terms in German, English and Japanese. Finely crafted drawings stand out brilliantly on velvety paper, which creates a pleasant contrast with its off-white color. There is also a visual balance between the left and right-hand pages, creating an aesthetic interplay of text and image through geometric rigor. ‚Clear, concise and well thought-out,‘ summarized the jury, who also appreciated the cliché-free reference to Japan without cultural stereotypes.
The minimalist consistency is continued right through to the fourth cover page – even the ISBN code has been elegantly woven into a drawing. Linen-covered and carefully finished, the volume convinced the jury as a complete work that coherently translates the precision of woodworking.”
